Podcasts on Publishing

Podcasts on Publishing, a series of ten podcasts presented by The Book Publishers Association of Alberta (BPAA), is now available directly from this site or via iTunes.

The series contains a wide range of excellent information and knowledge that writers, publishers and readers will find interesting and valuable. I had the pleasure of interviewing some of my BPAA colleagues and other experts in the field, including Andrew Savikas, Todd Anderson and Sean Howard, and producing the podcasts.

Podcasts like these provide opportunities for new publishers and new writers to learn about the industry and for veteran writers and publishers to learn from their colleagues.

Thanks to those who participated in this series and thanks to The Canada Council for the Arts (Conseil des Arts du Canada) and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts who made the series possible by providing funding to the BPAA.

Sometimes a session just cooks. Michael Johnson, Lynn Miles, Gabe Rhodes. Joe Gracey and everyone else on Stage Four this afternoon were delighted with the music as was the audience.

The final main stage concert is continuing as I write this blog entry, but the sessions at the small stages (my favourites) are over for another year. Next year we'll gather again to hear old musical friends and new ones. I'm looking forward to it.

Magic on the Hill: Songwriters and Singers at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival

We spent the morning and afternoon at Stage Six at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival listening to musical storytellers, some well-known and some new to most of us. The festival features seven small stages and one large main stage.

The small stages usually feature three or four artists or groups in 60 or 90 minute concerts. Several years ago Steve Earle told us that in Nashville they call this a guitar pull, but here it's just a workshop or concert.

Most of the performers feature their own songs, but in one concert the groups finished by playing some of their favourite songs, songs written by other songwriters.
