Forty years ago, in the summer of 1974, the Edmonton Art Gallery (now the Art Gallery of Alberta) organized an exhibition of photographs, the first time an exhibition of photographs was hung in this gallery. Terry Fenton, Director of the Gallery, and photographer/teacher Hubert Hohn organized the exhibition which included works by eleven local photographers (I was very pleased to be one of them).
Photography was a late-comer to art galleries in Canada but it now has a significant presence in private and public galleries and collections. Artists use photographs and photographic techniques in many ways, only some of which result in traditional photographs hanging on gallery walls.
Since 1974, The Edmonton Art Gallery and now the The Art Gallery of Alberta have featured exhibitions of photography regularly.
Edmontonians are very proud of the AGA. It’s a very modern gallery in terms of its programming and its design. Stop by and visit it when you’re in town.
